W210: Daily Diesel, K40 Replacement
So, K40 replacement on a W210 is done to cure random stalling, no start conditions, etc. It feeds power to the main engine computer and a variety of other systems on the car. In my case, random no starts that, with a few turns of the key, would start and the occasional random stall. Was hit or miss when it would happen. At the bottom of the post, I have a sheet of codes that were thrown when I had my Xentry hooked up to the car.
No reason to NOT go through Mercedes for this part. Will cost you around $120, don't fuss around with used parts....
No reason to NOT go through Mercedes for this part. Will cost you around $120, don't fuss around with used parts....
Part number 210 540 0372 was the one I needed for my 97 E300 Diesel
Process is very simple. Grab your finest philips head screwdriver and unscrew the 4 fasteners located around this cover.
You'll expose a bunch of computer modules - the one I'm pointing at is your K40.
Here's mine up close.
Pull back this little tab and wiggle your relay out. Reverse procedure and you're good to go. Don't even need to disconnect the battery. 10 minutes is the longest this job should take!
Here's a pic of the codes that popped up on Xentry. CAN interuption seems to be a common theme here. So far it's been a few weeks and I've hadn't had the car do anything out of the norm. Which is good, because it's going to be going on a cross country journey. Legit cross country.... 5-6k mile journey.... Oh great. I'll try to document it like I did with the 500SL 6.0 AMG trip.
Codes related to stalling:
IFI - P1221 - CAN Reception from ASR/ETC/ESP
ETS - C1022 - CAN Interrupted with ME N3/10
ETC.6 (transmission) - 132/135 - Engine Management Implausible/Interruption
IC - B1040 - CAN communication fault to ECM
IC - B1041 - CAN communication fault to Traction
Codes being cleared and about 30 "trips" run through the system with no fault signs.
Disregard my ECM fault writing down below - I have some sensors to renew throughout the car while I'm doing other work that will remedy my problems.
Anyhow, thanks for reading.

W210: Daily Diesel, Sweet Pick Up! Rare Euro Wheel Goodness!
Had a sweet pick up of craiglist today.... well actually, these were delivered to me at the sunday Mercedes meet ups. Which, hey, I can't complain about!
Part # B66470094
Part # B66470094
7.5Jx16 ET 41
W210 / W202 fitment wheel, which is great, because I've got a W210 to put these on..
Came with some fairly new-ish Blizzaks on two wheels, the other two are Pilot Alpina which are a bit old, so I'll be replacing the other two with Blizzaks as well. This car should run nice and smooth in the snow, pretty excited for it!
Here's the part number and sizing for anyone interested. These are generally euro only wheels, so good luck! A few sets are in the states, so you may be able to snag a set new from Tom at the Classic Center.

FOR SALE: FACTORY Mercedes OM603 REMANUFACTURED 3.5L Engine Block / #18 Factory Reman Cylinder Head! RARE RARE RARE!
We'll get it out of the way, $2200 for the block and $1600 for the cylinder head with reman injectors CYL HEAD $$$$OLD.
Figure it's time to do something about this particular engine sitting around the ole friendly confines. Factory reman block with updated rods/pistons. All marks are present (I will try and get pictures of the rods when I get a new pan gasket in)
The engine number is ground off and only 603 is remaining, a small sign of a factory reman.
The big sign that everyone with a rodbender diesel hopes to see!
603 010 3102 !
This was definitely a post 00 reman engine as well. The use of torx fasteners was prevalent throughout the entire engine assembly. Valve cover, water pump, etc were all torx fasteners.
Now I've got some jewelry for the cylinder head.
Cleaned up prechambers with seal rings as a bit of the head was shaved down.
Reman injectors!
Prechamber seat rings.
Here's the beauty that is the 18
Hey, check out those new valves....
Nice.
Factory reman heads had their 603's shaved off. This particular one was an 18 head, which is amazing in it's own right. Literally the best of the best here.
